-Sir Walter Raleigh gets grant from Queen Elizabeth to explore North America, but lacks financial support

-Establishes colony at Roanoke with Sir Richard Grenville with help from private investors

-91 men, 17 women, and 9 kids arrived in 1587 after a failed attempt in 1585

-John White (commander of expedition) left to get supplies and settlers from England but due to Spanish interference, did not return for 3 years

-Island was deserted with "Croatoan" carved on a post

-Settlers could have been destroyed by natives or joined them
