On June 7th, Richard Henry Lee, a statesman from Virginia, proposes a declaration for independence and the Second Continental Congress concurred.
On June 11th, Congress appoints a "Committee of Five", which consists of John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, T.J. of Virginia, Robert R. Livingston of New York, and Roger Sherman of Connecticut, to draft a formal declaration. With much consideration and deliberation with the committee, it takes T.J. seventeen days to write up a draft, and on June 28th it is presented before Congress. This first draft includes the grievance that King George III prohibits laws that could abolish or reduce slavery in the colonies. Congress reconvenes on July 1st and on July 2nd, the second draft of the Declaration Of Independence is voted on (12 yay's, 1 abstain, 0 nay's). From then until late in the morning of July 4th, considerations and revisions are made by Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, and Congress. On the following day the "Committee of Five" is disbanded.
