31 déc. 1523 - German Peasants War (1524-1525)

Description:

Peasants in the early 16th century were held down by serfdom, a society where lords had complete control over commoners. Many peasants suffered with an overabundance of work, sometimes without compensation, high taxes, and the inability to benefit from economic improvement. Inspired by humanist and Lutheran beliefs, they created the Twelve Articles, which explained the civil rights they felt they deserved. After Martin Luther refused to be a part of their revolution, Thomas Müntzer took over and quickly led them into violent revolts. In 1525, Luther ordered German princes to put an end to the hysteria; over 100,000 rebels were killed, including Thomas Müntzer.
