1 mai 999 - intermission iii summary

Description:

dez, understandably horrified at the display on the screen, bursts into tears and runs into the bathroom. lucy lets him cry a bit before offering to take him on a walk.

on their walk around the motel parking lot, lucy explains that she was a reporter in lafrocina before the attack forced her and her sister to move. being only an intern, she just did silly fluff pieces about local celebrities—nothing important. however, she did do a small insight piece on the silverkins, and she never saw anything about him. It didn’t take a nat 20 to understand why.

she told him that she understands how it feels to be conflicted when someone like that had died. her parents were part of the anti-monster group. they died in the attack. she hated them for they stood for and what they did; but her and her sister still mourned their loss.

lucy looks dezenik in the eyes and tells him there was absolutely no fathomable reason to hide him away like that. his tiefling side was something to be celebrated; not hid away. and she hates that someone so close to him made him feel like his tiefling ancestry was something to be ashamed of.

dezenik believes her. lucy hugs him. the two head back inside.

meanwhile, maverick sets the camulet on the bedside pillow and walks into the connecting room and asks leander to step outside on the small balcony. out there, maverick tells him that he understands leander and the rest of them are “saving the world or whatever, but i just want to make one thing extremely clear to you.”

he grabs leander’s collar, “never threaten to take my brother away again.”

leander explains they needed the amulet. maverick explains he doesn’t care.

then, maverick asks if leander has any siblings. leander shakes his head no. maverick understands a bit more. the elf tells leander that he already lost his oldest brother. if he lost cam, he would’ve had nothing left. losing them was the worst thing he had ever felt.

leander understands. maverick apologizes for being aggressive, and leander apologizes for almost taking cam away. maverick hugs him. leander awkwardly pats his back.

the two, animosity between them gone, walk back inside.

meanwhile, cam lights up the amulet in an attempt to talk to someone. unfortunately, nobody left in the room speaks morse code. however, arinin uses her awaken mind ability to speak with him

cam immediately responds excitedly—he hasn’t been exactly able to speak with someone traditionally in about three years. he flaps his gob for about five minutes straight.

he then asks arinin if she thinks sal can help him. she says yes, and shows him her stealth boots. cam freaks out about them for another five minutes too.

arinin laughs. camden forgets “awaken mind” can read all of his thoughts, and he pokes fun at her laugh. she drops the stone on the carpet. camden silently vows to never make fun of her laugh again.

dez and lucy come back from their walk. dez walks into the room leander is sitting in.

leander asks dez why he was crying. dez just explains he’s squeamish. leander promises to warn him next time he uses his sword, so dez can look away. dez thanks him.

the bard asks leander what makes a good person.

“i think a good person is someone who just does the right thing and doesn’t want to hurt you.”
“so if someone wants to hurt me, they’re a bad person?”
“well… no, there can still be good people who want to hurt you—“
“UUUGH THIS IS HARD.”

leander comforts dez. he thinks dez’s horns are cool, and he has horn polish on him if dez wants some. leander then polishes dez’s horns—and they’re stunning. dez runs excitedly into the other room to show them off. lucy gives him a big thumbs up.

the next morning at breakfast, they prepare to depart and drive back to the worthington’s. brisk catches mice for him and his snake. arinin feeds her tiny dragon bacon. dez thinks a mouse looks too tasty for his liking.

maverick and lucy drink from a blue and pink vial respectively. leander recognizes the vials and expresses distaste in the potion—he hated the taste too when he took it. the trio find a special kind of solidarity within each other.

maverick buys lucy a bobblehead cat figurine from the motel’s gift shop. lucy takes out her polaroid camera and has a mini photoshoot with maverick and cadillac at his truck to document the journey.

on the drive there, dez makes maverick a shirt just a tad bit nicer than his workshop’s tanktop.

they arrive at the estate. dezenik immediately sees something familiar—a carriage with two white horses parked outside the house. the horses wear black covers, and the carriage is decorated in a black lace.

lucy and maverick decide to wait outside. benjamin opens the door for the four; he mentions they’re home early. they walk in and hear voices from the parlor: betsy giggling while a voice--unfamiliar to all except dezenik--flatters her.

you walk into the parlor and first see sal on an armchair resting his chin on his hand. he then sees you walk in and he slowly begins to smile. betsy stands along with her companion—a tall, elven woman wearing all black in mourning. she smiles gently at dez: “hello, darling.”

dez is bewildered and frightened, unaware of how his mother could have possibly found him here. betsy explains that they heard the news about his grandparents and invited her. dez, still bewildered: “no, how did you find out I was a silverkin?”

ben steps forward, fidgeting with his fingers, “when I found out you would be staying with us… I did a few… background checks.”

arinin gets furious at dez for keeping this from her. she flips off milleseta when she introduces herself. she storms off to the guest room.

leander and brisk introduce themselves. milleseta flatters them both, hiding her smile behind her maroon colored feather fan while she calls leander’s sharpened teeth “how esquisite.”

she wishes to speak with dez. sal clears his throat and nods towards the solarium. everyone leaves the duo alone.

leander and brisk tell betsy and sal the story. betsy grabs lucy and maverick from outside. maverick and sal shake hands and nod at each other awkwardly—maverick is just plain star-struck while sal is just plain awkward. betsy explains the plan for the camulet.

since maverick has essentially used the amulet to create a pocket dimension, it is possible to use an enhanced version of planer ally to pull his soul from that pocket dimension back to the faerun. in the week the party was gone, sal and betsy added two more aster degrees to their belts: human anatomy and interdimensional magic theory, respectively. while sal was to build camden’s new body, betsy would create a box to store his soul in and power the robot.

(the university took most of their inventions and their published papers as “independent studies”, and they passed the final exam with flying colors.)

maverick pretended to know what they were talking about. lucy had her doubts that something like that was actually possible. sal takes maverick as an apprentice. camden eagerly awaits the day he’ll be free.

milleseta reaches out and gingerly cups her son’s cheek in her hand. she says that she never stopped loving him—not for a single moment. she also begs for his forgiveness for letting the rest of the family treat him that way. milleseta tells dezenik that her mother—his grandmother—forced her to try and cast “full polymorph” on him to turn him to a full high elf. since milleseta is not and was never a very powerful wizard, the spell only half worked; hence his half-tiefling, half-elf ancestry instead of the full tiefling he was born with.

the queen commanded her to cast it again. milleseta summed up all the bravery within her and fought back and refused to do so.

the queen swore that if milleseta dared cross her again, dez would suffer for it. this caused milleseta to be terrified to show her son any affection in case her mother would harm him.

he forgives her. she thanks him. they embrace.

but, now that the grandparents are gone… dez is free to come back and she swears they’ll treat him right. he wishes to stay. she accepts this. “whatever you want. whatever makes you happy.”

leander and his mother, belcoria, train in the gym. after a few rounds, belcoria steps forward. she retells leander the story of how she found him as a child.

that night, arinin was awoken by a floating, dark aquamarine colored orb singing “my jolly sailor bold”. she followed the magic down to the dock in the backyard and jumped into the lake. she floated down and landed on a soft surface; and when the orb hit the surface, it illuminated the colossal figure of her patron, chuthulu. he expressed joy in her developing powers, as he is finally able to see her. arinin asked why he picked her to be one of his warlocks. he knows what it’s like to be an outcast, to have people be afraid of you just by what you look like, and wants the people who have suffered like he has to have a place of belonging.

arinin than asks what he wants her to do with her powers. her patron glances above the water and responds: “i believe you are doing an extraordinary job with them already.”

he bid her farewell, and promises her if she ever needed him, he would always be there.

she wakes up on her cot in the guest room.

the sunrise kisses the fearun good morning. the party heads downstairs for breakfast, but before brisk can follow them, his haunting slams the door shut. his face shifts and contorts as the black skin rips to form a large, horrifying smile.

it appears to inhale sharply. “aha! brisk! finally, you’re leveled up enough! I get to talk to’ya!”

brisk asks what it wants from him, why does it torture him. it responds because it’s funny—and because it’s just punishment for what he did to his family.

it asks if he enjoys being the worthington’s runner. brisk is happy to being good. the haunting rolls its eyes. it asks if brisk knows they aren’t going to defeat the rapture.

“he’s been building an army for the past thousand years. you know what he did when he rampaged? HE BURNT THE WORLD TO A CRISP. AND HE’S GOING TO DO IT AGAIN!"

“well, the world is still here. so he didn’t do a good job. he was defeated before, and he can be defeated again!”

“you really are a naive little moron, aren’t you?”

the haunting opens the door for him. “well, i’ll let you go run around and be the worthington’s bitch. you aren’t going to defeat him!”

it disappears. brisk clings to his optimism.

arinin sees betsy about leveling up one of her spells. betsy asks arinin how she’s feeling after… yesterday.

“i’m feeling better. i realized i acted really childish yesterday, and i’m really sorry. when’s dez getting back? i owe him and his mom an apology.”

betsy is very, very surprised at the display of maturity that arinin had seemingly grew into overnight for no reason. “ah… soon, darlin’! i’ll let’cha know when he comes back first thing.”

arinin nods and thanks her. betsy grins at her and teaches her how to improve FUCK I COMPLETELY FORGET WHY DON'T I TAKE FUCKING NOTES DURING THE SESSIONS IM A JACKASS

brisk slithers out to the solarium and sees lucy reading a book. she grins and tells him to sit with her.

the halfling thanks him for everything his party did for the town. she doesn’t mention poppop or her sister. brisk was happy to help; plus, he loved the desert. lucy says that maverick and her found a loft around a half hour from here above a garage; maverick and cam are going to restart their garage while she gets a job at the local newspaper. brisk is happy for them.

they goof off. lucy asks if brisk wants to learn how to cast fireball. the two bond over their shared love of anime.
