5 sept. 1945 - Igor Gouzenko Defected

Description:

Igor Gouzenko was a Russian clerk working at the Soviet embassy in Ottawa. On September 5, 1945, he defected, exposing the operation of a Soviet spy ring within the Canadian government. They were assumed to have been in search of nuclear weapon information. At first, Gouzenko's claims were ludicrous in the eyes of the Ottawa Journal, RCMP, Department of Justice, and Prime Minister, who he gave secret documents to for better identifying the ring. Canadian authorities only began to trust Gouzenko’s accusations and target members of the ring once his apartment was broken into by Soviet agents. The realization of Soviet spy activity in Canada was alarming, and made Canada more closely involved in the Cold War.
