Two writers from the Des Moines Register decided to write a series of articles while riding bicycles across Iowa, and they invited the public to join them. 114 people made it across the state in an event called The Great Six-Day Bicycle Ride (later renamed the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, or RAGBRAI).
