8 nov 1939 - Georg Elser's Beer Hall Bomb
Description:
On this day, Hitler spoke at the Bürgerbräukeller brewery (the place of the failed 1923 coup). Communist and carpenter Georg Elser planned to kill Hitler when he did so.
He sneaked into the brewery every night to slowly hollow out a hole in the pillar near the speaker's stand, and when it was finished, put a home-made bomb with an 144-hour timer.
The bomb was to go off at 9:20- halfway through Hitler's proposed time for the speech, but due to urgent war business, he did his speech early, leaving the building by 9:12. When the bomb exploded, killing 8 people and injuring 60- none of them Hitler.
If Hitler had died then, a young and energized Nazi Germany may have faltered in their war efforts. The Nazis relied on a cult of personality surrounding Hitler to keep the population in line with their ideas, and is likely Hitler's death would have seriously stunted Germany as they conducted WW2.
