18 sept. 1850 - Fugitive Slave Act

Description:

This was a law passed as part of a compromise during the 19th century slavery debate in state holding. It allowed for the unwarranted capture of African-Americans in any state, under the pretense that the person in question was the plaintiff's slave. Since no trial ever took place, even free blacks were dragged off into slavery. (History.com 2009)

This had a significant impact on the lives of Northerners, blacks, and the entire country (when the Civil War came around). Since tensions were already high, this amelioration of a feudal topic wasn't effective enough to stop the eventual conflict around slavery. Culturally speaking, this made blacks paranoid and angry, stirring up texts and messages to mobilize abolitionists.
