23 févr. 1916 - Alfred von Tirpitz resigns

Description:

Failure after failure plagued Tirpitz's career. Before the war even began proper he was snubbed by the diplomatic staff who claimed that the lack of British intervention was not the effect of some 'risk theory' as Tirpitz had proposed but rather by statesmanship. That very same staff had then promised the British that the Imperial German Navy would have its power reduced for the sake of British safety, a move which drastically reduced Tirpitz's power. When war finally did come, through chance alone, the Russians managed to defeat the German Navy at Gotland. For many in the upper command of Germany, this marked the end of the naval experiment. And for Tirpitz, it marked the death of his career and he resigned soon after.

Many cite this moment as the tipping point toward a succesful Kiel Conference.
