Description:

Sam Houston, knowing that has state was largely pro secession, allowed a referendum to be made and vowed to follow his state to the end, regardless of what they choose to do.

When the vote [which modern historians largely agree was rigged] came up in favor of secession, Houston proclaimed the state as the Second Republic of Texas.

However, unknown to anyone in his short lived republic, he planned on surrendering to Union forces at the first opportunity.
