Description:

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was signed by the United States, Canada, and several Western European nations. The aim of the organization was to provide collective security against the Soviet threat and to deter aggression from the Soviet bloc. U.S. officials feared the spread of communism from the Soviet Union through to Western Europe, and decided to form an alliance with them to deter any negotiations between Western Europe and the Soviet Union.
