The Soviet Union separated into fifteen countries. Its collapse was hailed by the West as a victory for freedom, a triumph of democracy over totalitarianism, and evidence of the superiority of capitalism over socialism. The breakup of the Soviet Union led to the creation of a different world political situation, leading to a complete change of political, economic and military alliances across the world. The collapse occurred due to the drop in the Soviet economy and this led to Soviets losing control of Eastern Europe. The USSR was officially renamed to Russia, and a new president was put into power of Russia. With the end of the Soviet Union was the end of the Cold War.
