Berlin wall was built and the borders were sealed between East and West Germany. The wall is built to separate West Berlin from the East. It was a guarded concrete barrier that physically and ideologically divided Berlin. Berlin was a hotbed for Cold War tensions between the Americans and the Soviets. The main purpose of the wall in the opinion from the Western powers was to stop the flow of East Germans into West Berlin where they had access to NATO protection and economic opportunity. The East Germans disagreed and said it was to protect them from the Western aggression. West Berlin became an island of Western values and beliefs within a sea of Soviet-dominated communism.
