13 déc. 1437 - Norman French makes a lasting impact on English

Description:

10,000 words were adopted from French, most of them still in use today.
English words were also adopted into French.

French scribes changed the Old English letter pattern "hw" to "wh", to be consistent with "ch" and "th".
"Hwaer" changed to "where",
"Hwaenne" to "when",
"Hwil" to "while".

A "w" was even added to some words that began with "h"
"Hal" became "whole".

The oddities continued when "hwo" became "who". The "w" sound was omitted.
