This was a hot metal typesetting machine, invented and patented by Tolbert Lanston of Philadelphia, This was a two-part machine, consisting of a keyboard and caster that could cast individual types in any order, allowing the text to be composed and cast at the same time, which enabled more flexibility for the writer.
