11 juill. 1990 - Oka Crisis

Description:

After the Oka town council threatened to expand a golf course into sacred Mohawk territory, citizens of the local Kanesatake reserve blockaded the land on July 11, 1990, in protest of construction. When police confronted the group, violence broke out, and an officer was killed. This led to months of violent protesting in neighbouring reserves, as well as reserves throughout Canada; blockades were put up across highways and railways in support of the Kanesatake territory. Eventually, Canadian Forces were called in to end the dispute, which was only officially over once the Canadian government purchased the disputed land, and gave it to Kanesatake. This was a bittersweet ending, as the Mohawk people were able to save their sacred land, but Aboriginal-government relations continued to suffer.
