1 janv. 1951 - Potlatch Ban Repealed
Description:
The potlatch is a Northwest Coast First Nations ceremony. It is crucial to their cultural practice, as well as their governing system. This ceremony was banned by the Canadian government on April 19, 1884 as a part of their effort to assimilate Aboriginal people into Canadian culture, however the ban was repealed in 1951. The repeal of the ban was a good step towards better relations between Aboriginals and the Canadian government, though by that time, irremediable severs of historical, spiritual, and social importance had already been created.
