10 mars 2018 - 72. The Rokeby Venus and her sisters or half-sisters

Description:

This day, 104 years ago, ‘Venus at her mirror’, also known as ‘Rokeby Venus’, by the Spanish painter Diego VELÁZQUEZ (1599-1660) in the National Gallery of London (1), was attacked with a meat chopper by Mary Richardson, a suffragette who later became a disciple of the fascist Oswald Mosley. This masterpiece has been described in all its historical, iconographic or iconological details numerous times (2) and its many copies by other artists were broadly discussed in post of March 27, 2014 of this blog (3). The story of the slashing of the canvas has been well disclosed elsewhere (4). The aim of this post is to explore artworks of similar female nudes with their backside to the viewer, before and after VELÁZQUEZ's painting.
