21 juill. 2016 - 61. Distant Viewing (2): Two well-known beauties, naked and shameless, and their dummies

Description:

Whether ‘The sleeping Venus’ (1508-10) of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden (1) was painted by GIORGIONE alone or together with his collaborator-friend TIZIANO or finished by the latter - a much debated issue in art history - is not our concern in this second post of the series Distant viewing – a condition of knowledge.
What matters in this post is: 1° the similarity with ‘Una donna nuda’, now known as ‘The Venus of Urbino’ (1538) of the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence (2), painted 30 years later by TIZIANO in a daring innovative way; 2° the repetitions in later years by artists, both Italian and non-Italian, inspired by either GIORGIONE’s or TIZIANO’s painting; 3° the quantitative analysis of the Topic ‘Venus asleep or awakening’ (3) of which these famous paintings and their repetitions are only a limited part.
