29 août 2011 - 8. The Iconclass System (I)

Description:

In this blog dedicated to 'Iconography in Art History' the Iconclass System should not be omitted. My first post about Iconclass is a short description of the system, illustrated with the example of 'Aphrodite/Venus' as simple queries. My second post will be a discussion of Iconclass usage related to the objective of this blog and the aim of the 'Topical Catalogues'. Originally developed by Henri van de Waal (1910-1972), Professor of Art History at the University of Leiden (NL) from the early '50s onwards, Iconclass is since September 2006 under daily management and further development by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, or RKD) in The Hague. The full history can be read at the Iconclass homepage
