Description:

The famous beautiful narrative poem of Shakespeare, published in 1593-94 and the Prado version of Titian's 'Venus y Adonis', painted in 1553 for Philip II of Spain to commemorate his marriage to Queen Mary Tudor. Shakespeare's interpretation of Ovid's myth is quite unusual where Venus is very outspoken and tries in vain to conquer Adonis who is finally leaving her. The painting of Titian depicts this departure, very well reflected in Shakespeare's verse 225:
'Sometime her arms enfold him like a band'.
