John Ernst Steinbeck, Jr was born in Salinas California to businessman John Ernst Steinbeck and former teacher Olive Hamilton. Growing up in the fertile and beautiful Salinas Valley, Steinbeck grew to appreciate nature (as would later be reflected in his writing). A shy yet mischievous boy, Steinbeck enjoyed a happy childhood with his 3 sisters. His family was not wealthy, but his parents were prominent and engaged in the community.Pictured below is young John with his younger sister Mary and the Steinbeck family home which has since been made a restaurant and museum.
