Description:

An aphetic form of ‘abiliment’ which derives from French ‘habillement’ and was used in the sixteenth century for ornamental articles of a woman’s attire, especially those round the head and neck. 1551 <i>my perell belyment</i>, Halnaby (SS26/76); 1584 <i>two billamentes of golde enamyled sett wyth pearle</i>, Kirby Knowle (YRS50/222). Note: 1572 ‘one petticoat with billim lacing and fringe’, Doncaster (YAJ35/307).
