After being in WW2 for 4 years, the decision as for the end of the war came down to newly appointed President Harry Truman on what the US should do. On August 6th, 1945 the US decided to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and on August 9th, 1945 Nagasaki in order to send a message to the Japanese government that this war needed to end and the US would go to any measure to end it. The decision became controversial because so many innocent Japanese lives had been lost and now other world powers around the world would be building up their nuclear arms. The dropping of the atomic bomb would propel the US into a rivalry against the USSR for the years to come.
