The Domesday Book was a record of what everyone owned, what tax they owed and if they could afford to pay more.

Significance:
-William wanted to find how he could get more money from his tenants-in-chief.
-The survey help solve legal disputes and so boosted the image of William as a fair king.
-They commission may have been linked to threat of a Danish invasion to see what supplies and troops could be raised.
