King Farouk I of Egypt had a playboy reputation and used his wealth to enjoy a lavish lifestyle. Poverty-stricken Egypt was generally frustrated with Farouk, who was incompetent and corrupt. He was largely blamed for the Egypt's losses in the 1948-49 War due to defective weapons and lack of preparation.

King Farouk was forced to abdicate by disillusioned army officers who led a coup against him. Nasser was a key figure in this coup, although he did not lead it.
