12 mars 1947 - Truman Doctrine

Description:

This was a foreign policy of the United States that was enacted by President Truman and its purpose was to stop Soviet expansion throughout Europe so as to limit their control and stop the spread of communism. A big part of this doctrine was to help countries like Greece and Turkey get back on their feet so that they were strong and couldn’t be easily taken over by the Soviet Union. This usually didn’t involve the US putting armed forces on the ground, but would generally involve in financial support of these countries, which the US provided a lot of. This became a huge part of American foreign policy for many years and ultimately lead to the creation of NATO, which is still in effect today.
