Launched by president Eisenhower in 1944, Operation Overlord, or D-Day, began when about 156,000 American, British, and Canadian forces landed on five beaches in Normandy. Their objective was to liberate France, and the rest of Western Europe, from Nazi Germany’s control. D-Day took a huge toll in terms of the number of deaths that happened on both sides, but was a huge Allied success, and is often called the beginning of the end of the war.
