Description:

News of the discovery of gold spread rapidly in the east.
Thousands of people moved west in hope of becoming rich.
The majority of miners failed to find any gold and either returned home or settled in the west as farmers. These settlements became the foundations of later towns.

Consequences:
-The western population increased dramatically.
-It became one of the key factors of the development of the west.
-Law and order became a problem as law enforcement couldn't keep up with the increase in population.

Impacts on the Plains Indians:
-Miners killed Indians or forced them to leave if they thought gold was on their land.
-New towns developed which brought a new culture to the Indians.
-Miners introduced new diseases to the Indians which they were not immune to.
-Miners killed buffalo for sport or meat.
-This contributed to incresing tensions between miners and Indians.
