On April 4, 1949, the United States and 11 other Western nations met in Washington D.C. to discuss what actions should be taken due to the prospect of further Communist expansion. They formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, also known as NATO. NATO was made to provide collective security against the Soviet Union.

As a result of the formation of NATO, the organizations started adding new nations to grow the organization. One of the nations to join after the start of the organization was West
