Description:
The Freedom Rides were bus trips through the South that were meant to be a nonviolent protest against the segregation of bus terminals. The groups consisted of both African American and Whites. The Freedom Riders faced arrests and violence in their journey. After arriving in Alabama, the bus being used was mobbed and burned. Kennedy called in the federal marshals to assist and break up the mob. The events brought in national attention. In the fall of 1961, the Kennedy administration issued regulations that would prohibit segregation in bus and train terminals.
