2 août 1250 - Who Treated the Sick

Description:

Physicians:
- Medically trained at university
- Diagnosed illness, gave treatments and/or referred patients to apothecaries and B-S'
- Very few so they're quite rare
- Very expensive

Apothecaries:
- Received training but had no qualifications
- Mixed medicines and ointments
- Costed money but not too expensive

Barber-Surgeons:
- Had no training
- Cut hair, pulled teeth, lanced boils and did blood letting
- Did basic surgery like amputating limbs at a very low success rate
- Cost the same as an apothecary

Care in the home:
- Ill people were often treated by a female family member for free
- The village wise woman would also go to the homes of the ill for free

Physicians did three things:
1. Observed the patients and their symptoms such as pulse, skin colour and urine (both colour and taste)
2. They consulted urine and zodiac charts
3. They then sent the patient to an apothecary
