American civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. was shot outside his Memphis, Tennessee hotel on a sunny April afternoon after a day of campaigning. He was rushed to a hostpital and declared dead on arrival. His assassin, James Earl Ray was caught two months later in London, extradited to the US and given 99 years in prison. Ray died in prison at the age of 70.
