Reagan believed in a massive military buildup because he felt that the US needed to weaken communism and believed that the USSR could not spend as much as the US on defense. This initiative followed that point and proposed land and space-based lasers to destroy any missiles aimed at the US before it reached its target. Some called this program "Star Wars" feeling like it was unrealistic
