This surprise attack by the Japanese in Oahu led the United States' entry into World War II. This strike worsened the decade of deteriorating relations between the United States and Japan. Following Japan's 1937 invasion of China, its alliance with the Axis Powers in 1940, and its occupation of French Indochina in 1941 led the United States to freeze Japanese assets and declare an embargo on petroleum and other war material shipments to Japan.
