Description:
President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act which promised Native Americans unsettled land west of the Mississippi following their forced removal from their current territories. This act allowed the United States to gain control of the land that was owned by the Native Americans, and forced the Native Americans to eventually abandon their homes.
