In the July-August 1845 issue of the Democratic Republic, John L. O'Sullivan published an article titled Annexation, which called on the United States to admit Texas into the union as a state. O’Sullivan claimed that the United States was granted the god-given right to expand the union to the pacific ocean. This notion helped fuel the territorial expansion of the 19th century.
