Description:

The U.S. Congress passed this important legislation before the war ended to avoid the problem of massive unemployment for returning veterans, who numbered 15 million in 1945. It had far reaching effects, as the soldiers who fought the war were given access to higher education, $14.5 billion and another $16 billion was loaned to veterans to purchase homes, businesses and farms. There was no bonus army complaining about this bill, instead the growth in tertiary education, expansion in housing construction and the provision of human resources for research and development of better technology, helped fuel one of the longest periods of economic expansion in U.S. history
