21 mars 1947 - Loyalty Review Board

Description:

Initiated out of a fear of Communism within the U.S. government. The Loyalty Program, begun in 1947 by the Truman administration, established a Loyalty Review Board to investigate "subversion." Some 3,000 federal employees were dismissed or resigned as a result of the investigations. As the second "Red Scare" progressed into the McCarthyism of the early 1950's, Truman refused to go along with Congressional witch hunts. Notably, he vetoed the 1950 McCarran Internal Security Bill, which gave the President more power to detain "suspicious" people during an internal security emergency. Not many presidents veto bills that give them more power. Congress overrode Truman's veto.
