The Meiji Restoration ended the power of the Tokugawa shogun and returned the Emperor to the central position in Japanese politics and culture. Before the Meiji Restoration, the emperor had no political power and was viewed simply as a symbol of the Japanese culture. He was the head of the Shintô religion which was Japan's native religion.
