The Birmingham Church bombing occurred on September 15th, 1963 when a predominantly African American congregation church was bombed before Sunday mass. Four young girls were killed and many other people injured. Rage over the incident and the violent clash between protesters and police that followed the next day had helped draw national attention to the hard-fought struggle for civil rights for African Americans.
