One of Polk's contemporaries commented about Polk that, "what he went for, he fetched." Polk's agenda was well defined from the very beginning of his administration: 1. A lowered tariff, the Walker Tariff of 1846, lowered the tax rate on imports from about 32% to 25%. 2. Restoration of Independent Treasury and final death of the privately owned National Bank in 1846. 3. Get California. 4 Settle the border of Oregon with Great Britain.
