Freedom Summer, also known as the Mississippi Summer Project, started in June of 1964. This was a project aimed at getting as many African Americans as they could to register to vote in Mississippi. The group consisted of black Mississippians and around 1,000 out of state whites. The town got mad so police and Klu Klux Klan members would violently attack the activists.
