[buildup] successful Hungarian revolt (1956) → new leaders try to pull Hungary out of Warsaw Pact (communist security organization) → Khrushchev = angry, sends tanks in to restore control
[US response] didn’t get involved; Eisenhower feared it’d touch off a major war → nullified Dulles talk of ‘liberating’ Eastern Europe
