a scandal that erupted after the Reagan ADmin sold weapons to Iran in hopes of freeing American hostages in lebanon; money from the arms sales was used to aid the contras (anti communist) even though congress banned this assistance. there was talk of impeaching reagan until 2 of his aides took the blame.
