Goodman and Schwerner had traveled from New York to Mississippi to help organize civil rights efforts on behalf of the CORE. James Chaney was a local that was a part of CORE. While in Mississippi, Schwerner organized a successfull black boycott of a variety store in the city of Meridian. The three men were hated by white supremacists and went missing on June 21.
