Laid paper, characterized by the visible chain lines and texture from wire molds, was the standard for centuries. In the mid-18th century, English papermaker James Whatman pioneered the production of woven paper, which featured a smoother, more uniform surface ideal for fine printing and illustration, and had "no visible chain lines." This innovation enhanced print clarity and eventually became the preferred medium for modern publishing, thereby helping usher in the industrial era of book production.
