In the 18th century, Europeans began buying more luxury and household goods such as tea, sugar, and cotton textiles. The growth of trade and wealth allowed a new middle class to express status through consumption. This repesented a major soicla change as ordinary people gained access to new goods one reserved to those of status. Yet the economic gap betwen the rich and poor still was a growing conflict.
