Description:

The Hong Lim area was represented by PAP's Ong Eng Guan. In 1960, he fell out of favour with the PAP and was suspended in June after challenging PAP's leadership and was expelled, triggering a by-election. He contested as an independent, defeating the PAP candidate, worrying Tungku as it signified the increasing divide within the PAP.

To Tungku, one group of the PAP had moderate views, and pushed for gradual change whilst the other, including Ong, was radical and pushed for drastic change and would use violence and force. He was scared that the radical group would take over the PAP.
