Johnny Depp talks about the memory of fragrance - "There is no limit to Dior Sauvage"

Johnny Depp, who appeared in Dior's new fragrance campaign visual, said, "Scent and music are similar." Depp talked about the background of the impressive video, the songs used and his feelings for the musicians, and the relationship between fragrance and memory.

By GQ Japan

Music is also very similar to fragrance, and it has the power to time travel back in that era.

A new visual of Dior's men's fragrance "Sauvage" has been completed. Johnny Depp, who has been the icon since the release of "Sauvage" since 2015, has appeared, and Jean Baptist Mondino, known for music videos such as rock star portraits and Madonna, is in charge of filming. It's a hit topic.

The scent of "The scent of "Sauvage", which means wild or wild in French, was inspired by Dior perfumer François Demacy from the vast land. The gap between roughness and nobility is powerfully penetrated by fresh notes.

How was the personality and charm of "Sauvage" expressed in the video? I asked Johnny Depp.

What is the essential charm of perfume?

──Please tell us about the character of Jean Baptist Mondino, who collaborated this time.

Johnny Depp (hereinafter referred to as JD) is a wonderful person. We feel that it was too late to meet, and I think it would have been better if we had met 30 years ago.

──What kind of creator is Jean Baptist?

JD doesn't show the story in his head as easily as handing over the candy. To understand his image, you need to trust him and immerse yourself in his worldview while having fun.

──Why was Jean Baptist able to combine his reputation as an artist and his commercial success?

I think JD has left a great work by frankly telling him that he is not interested in making a lot of movies, and he wants to shoot music videos and photos like this. He has built a career in video works and photographs such as commercial films and music videos, and while succeeding in such commercial work, he has always played a separate business of inserting art into it. So ironically, I stayed in the commercial world to continue to be an artist.

──How do you evaluate Jean Baptist as a director?

The way JD treated the actors was perfect. He gently snuggles up to me like a best friend. He is a very open and most pleasant director.

──Before listening to the story of "Sauvage", please tell us the memory of the first scent you remember.

JD I was born in Kentucky, which is called "Bluegrass State", so the memory of the oldest scent is linked to grass. Even now, when you smell the scent of flowers in the countryside, the memories of your childhood come back to you.

──Scent and memory are closely linked.

The JD fragrance drives you to your inner journey. Smells and scents directly remind you of a specific person, place, or thing.

──What is the appeal of perfume to you?

When I was 16 or 17 years old when I started wearing JD perfume, I was playing the guitar at the club. After playing, spray perfume. I don't even know what it smells like. Even now, when I close my eyes like that, some kind of scent reminds me of myself in the waiting room of the club. I think the essential charm of perfume is that I can revive such feelings before the 6th stage begins.

──Please let us know what you think of "Sauvage".

JD It's not a scent specially custom-made for me, but I feel that it's a scent made for myself. It's the perfect fragrance for me in every way, and I probably feel that it's a fragrance for me because each material is min perfect proportion. I've never felt this way about perfume before.

Love and respect for a genius guitarist

──Please tell me about music. A song called "WILD THING" was used in this video work.

JD "WILD THING" is a rock gold standard song that has been covered countless times by many musicians. I felt that this song was the best choice to combine Dior's vision with Jean-Baptist's vision. It was originally a band called The Troggs song, but I think that the version covered by Jimi Hendrix was brought true life into this song by his unique guitar sound.

──That's why the motif of the now deceased Jimi Hendrix version of "WILD THING" has become.

JD is right. And when I thought of a guitarist who expressed Jimi's worldview, I could only think of Jeff Beck when I looked around the world. Because before her debut, Jimi, who moved her activity base from the United States to London, learned a lot from Jeff's guitar playing. Eventually, the two became friends and were stimulated by each other's performances. In other words, "WILD THING" performed by Jimi Hendrix has an invisible influence from Jeff Beck.

──What kind of performance did you expect from your friend Jeff Beck?

JD Jean Baptist wanted a wild and unpredictable atmosphere of what would happen next. However, that does not mean that Jeff will play exactly like Jimi. In the end, it became a simple recording with no excessive sound effects, no drums or bass, only Jeff's guitar, in the expression of expressing love and respect for Jimi Hendrix, that is, greeting friends and delivering love. . I don't think there has been a performance that has been so close to and respectful to Jimi Hendrix.

Common points between acting and music

──If you look at the movie produced with this visual, you can see how much music means to you.

JD Since I started playing the guitar at the age of 12, music has been everything to me. Music is also very similar to fragrance, and it has the power to travel back in time to that era. Listening to Serge Gensbourg in the 1960s drives emotions and is directly carried to that era. These things should also be connected to the essence of acting.

──Did you ever want to do only music?

JD started playing at backyard parties when he was 12 years old, and started playing at a dirty panclock club in Miami Beach at the age of 13. It was difficult to leave the club at 4 a.m. and go to school, so I quit school at the age of 15, but I had nothing but wanted to be a guitar player, and I was not interested in acting at all. I started acting because I was forced to do it, and when I appeared in the movie, I didn't have to worry about the rent for a while. At that time, I did not give up my dream of becoming a musician, but I gave up on making music a career. I didn't want to be a person who would take advantage of my name and make music because my name was sold.

──What is the relationship between acting and music?

In JD music, organic relationships are born in an instant. It is a very direct relationship that the listener receives the music I am trying to deliver, and the same moment will never happen again. Acting is the same. What I'm looking for is an idea for acting. And push your limits, overcome them, and try. Just like what the perfumer Francois Dumassie did, he went beyond the limits and accomplished a bold and adventurous job. There is a risk, but because he knew what was right, he expressed directly what he wanted and felt.

──This video work was born inspired by his work.

JD "Sauvage" is the only one for me, and it is the most attractive fragrance in the world. " It is a great honor to be able to gather for a new chapter of the story called "Sauvage". There is no limit to "Sauvage". I don't think anyone knows how far this story will spread.
